QC Lab Technician 

Location: Eugene, Oregon

General Description: Mountain Rose Herbs is a progressive company seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals for our QC Laboratory.  

This is a full-time position. The technician is required to be here Monday through Friday. This position assists the QC lab manager and lead lab technician with routine functions and daily tasks both inside and outside the QC lab.

Experience with pipetting and using scales, balances, and pH meters is a plus.

Experience with the following testing is preferred: GC-MS, HPTLC, microbial testing, and/or any analytical chemistry.

This position starts at $20 - $23/hr. DOE

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Dependability: consistently at work and on time, follow instructions, respond to management direction, and solicit feedback for improved performance.
  2. Follow all MRH procedures, policies, and protocols including those specific to the lab.
  3. Report any health, safety, or equipment issues to appropriate personnel related to issue and area.
  4. Perform chemical testing on incoming samples.
    1. GC-MS – using GC-MS equipment, following methods, using QuEChERS kits for pesticide extractions, and preparing samples for pesticide screens.
  5. Perform botanical identity testing.
    1. HPTLC – using HPTLC equipment, following methods, doing research as needed, mixing chemicals, and compiling reports.
    2. Microscopy – making slides, following methods, doing research as needed, and compiling reports.
  6. Perform microbial analyses on incoming samples using the following:
    1. 3M Petrifilm and agar plates
    2. Bio-Rad PCR system
  7. Perform physical analyses on incoming samples using the following tests:
    1. Particle size measurements
    2. Bulk density measurements
    3. Extraneous matter investigations
    4. Moisture analyses
    5. Water activity analyses
    6. Macroscopy
    7. Organoleptic testing
    8. Microscopy
  8. Participate in general lab cleaning and upkeep, which requires sweeping, wiping down counters, and washing labware by hand.
  9. Monitor incubator temperatures.
  10. Monitor calibrations for scales and all pipettes.
  11. Sterilize labware and mediums.
  12. Maintain a sterile environment and utilizing infection control.
  13. Work around or with hazardous chemicals.
  14. Respond to QC/Lab radio calls on occasion.
  15. Send samples out for third party testing.
  16. Assist the QC Director with special projects.
  17. Perform pour reviews.
  18. Perform organoleptic assessment of non-herb products.
  19. Sample in-house blended products and incoming materials as needed.
  20. Make mediums on a bi-weekly basis, or as needed.
  21. Read and interpret microbial test results.
  22. Other duties as assigned.

Physical requirements may include but are not limited to: 

  • Lifting up to 50 pounds, or more with assistance.
  • Being on one’s feet most of the day and working in a stationary position for long periods of time.
  • Pushing a mobile cart.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Being exposed to herb dust.
  • Being exposed to strong aromatics.
  • Being exposed to specific laboratory chemicals.
  • Bending, stooping, twisting and moving when performing QC lab tasks.
