Sustainability Specialist

Location: Eugene, Oregon

General Description: 

This is a full-time, fast-paced, professional position that is responsible for the development, implementation, and effective marketing of the Mountain Rose Herbs (MRH) Sustainability Program including sustainability reporting, certifications, social and environmental projects, volunteer program, and the employee-staffed Green Team. This position is responsible for the continued growth and success of the Sustainability Program and represents the face of the company to customers and suppliers within the industry. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in marketing or communications is required along with a fervent love of all things sustainable with an emphasis on keeping the Sustainability Program relevant and engaging.

The wage for this position starts at $25.00/ hr. DOE

  • Develop an understanding of the organic movement in Oregon and the United States.

  • Possess exceptional writing and marketing skills which will be used for our blog and newsletter.

  • Type accurately and with proficiency with a working knowledge of common computer programs.

  • Capture and analyze data effectively and efficiently.

  • Exceptional negotiation and persuasion abilities, with a focus on achieving win-win outcomes.

  • Willingness to get their hands dirty from time to time coordinating the MRH volunteer team that works to improve natural areas, as well as coordinating with the facilities department to maintain and improve our recycling program.

  • Self-motivated and deadline-driven, with the ability to work independently and manage priorities.

  • Analytical mindset with the ability to gather and interpret data to drive informed business decisions.

  • Must be able to work in person at MRH’s Headquarters in Eugene, OR. This is not a remote position.

  • Engage in occasional day travel and overnight business trips, including regionally and/or nationally.

  • Shift gears at a moment's notice and maintain a professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Be dependable – consistently at work and on time, follow instructions, and respond to management feedback.

  2. Be proactive – continue to develop skills, gain additional knowledge, and solicit feedback for improved performance.

  3. Follow all MRH procedures, policies, and protocols.

  4. Responsible for MRH Sustainability Program and certifications:
    1. Green Team
    2. Zero Waste Program
    3. Mountain Rose Restoration Project
    4. Alternative Commute Program
    5. Giving Back Program
    6. Monthly staff trainings
    7. Oregon Benefit Company Report
    8. B Corp Certification and other certifications as needed

  5. Compose blogs that highlight MRH’s environmental and community involvement or “call to action” blogs that serve to inform and inspire.

  6. Build sustainability into our communications, the website, and social media.

  7. Create and manage the company’s Impact Report which outlines environmental and social policies. This report also highlights our annual successes.

  8. Coordinate 6-8 restoration projects annually.

  9. Inform employees of additional volunteer opportunities by posting on SharePoint and making flyers.

  10. Guide facilities and MRH leadership of the sustainable use of resources for the company which includes fuel, electricity, water, etc. This will involve working collaboratively with multiple departments.

  11. Attend several events throughout the year as a speaker and/or presenter.

  12. Act as a liaison and form a professional relationship with our nonprofit partners. This will also include coordinating sponsorships and numerous events.

  13. Oversee the corporate giving budget, review all donation requests, and request the funds.

  14. Keep abreast of sustainable packaging technology and improvements, and update management on those regularly.

  15. Willingness to learn and perform new procedures and use new equipment/technologies.

  16. Possess a valid Oregon driver’s license.

  17. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
  • Sustainability background preferred.
  • Progressive levels of leadership or management experience preferred.

Physical Requirements (may include but are not limited to):            

  • Must be able to sit for periods of time while either on the phone and/or performing data entry duties (typing, using a mouse, etc.).
  • Minimal physical requirements to include associated standing, bending, stooping, to retrieve files/orders. And seldom hard physical requirements including land moving, shoveling, pulling weeds, etc. This is required to lead volunteer projects.

  • Continual physical requirements of sitting or standing for periods of time to complete tasks.
  • Exposure to herb dust and strong aromatics.

 

Equipment Used:

  • Telephone, cell phone, printer, fax machine, file cabinets, and basic office equipment.
  • Computer to include mouse and using multiple programs operating simultaneously.
  • Company vehicles with proper safety training and precautions in place.
  • Hand tools including shovel, spade, trash collectors, etc.
  • Other necessary equipment with proper training and safety precautions in place.
